Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Rifle. Serial no. C2948 (barrel and upper tang), .45-70 caliber, 30-inch octagonal barrel marked Old Reliable and with address reading, Sharps Rifle Co. Bridgeport, Conn. "Knifeblade" front sight, Lawrence low notch elevator rear sight graduated to 7 with Buckhorn open sights added behind. Blued finish. Case-hardened receiver, lever and buttplate. Left side of barrel near breech marked CAL .45 2 ?/10. 1848 patent date visible left side of receiver. Double set trigger. Walnut forearm and buttstock. Steel curved buttplate. Weight 9.6lbs. Condition: Good. Retaining approximately 5-10% finish, the balance a blue-gray slightly mottled patina with scattered patches of fine pitting. Barrel has occasional nicks and light scratches commensurate with age. Buckhorn rear sight likely a period addition. Hammer screw a replacement. Stock with numerous pressure dents and small gouges. Wrist with interesting vacant oval steel escutcheon. Hairline crack extending from upper tang into comb. Small professional period wood repair at mid-comb. Forearm with sliver chip at right front. Bore with good rifling but moderately pitted throughout.
