Sharps Heavy Model 1874 Sporting Rifle with Factory Letter.
Serial no. 158995 (fore-end and buttplate marked: 8995 ), .45
caliber, 30-inch octagonal barrel with Bridgeport address, blade
front and unmarked Lawrence high notch rear sights and stamped: OLD
RELIABLE. Top barrel flat at breech marked: CAL. 45. Right barrel
flat marked: 2 7/8. Bottom barrel flat with: 2/11/16. Left side of
frame with Sharps Rifle Co. patent marking. Double-set triggers.
Oil-finished walnut stock with 5 brass tacks. Schnabel fore-end.
Standard shotgun buttplate. Weight approximately 16.5 lbs. Sold
together with a copy of the Sharps Factory Letter which confirms
configuration and states that the gun was invoiced to Sharps
dealer, Frank E. Conrad of Fort Griffin, Texas. The date of the
invoice is July 9, 1877. The sale is found on page 490 of the
Conrad Ledger Book. G. Kennedy is listed as purchasing this Sharps
rifle serial no. 158995 for $45 on August 28, 1877. Sold along with
pictures and research material pertaining to Mr. G. Kennedy.
Kennedy's knife is also being sold as Lot 40131.Condition: Very good. Barrel with a mostly smooth and fine blue-brown age patina with scattered spotting. Breech and lock plate also with a smooth age patina, mottled and showing a fair amount of silvered case colors. Stock is good as period altered with the tacks. Signs of heavy weathering. Scattered dents and small gouges. More recently applied varnish. Bore with heavy wear and moderate pitting. Action excellent.
