Lot of Two U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Rifles. Comprising: 1) U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle. Serial no. 434708, .45-70 caliber, 32 ½-inch round barrel with fixed front and adjustable rear sight. Straight walnut stock with two barrel bands, stacking swivel, curved metal buttplate (no trap) and cleaning rod. 2) U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle. Serial no. 438296, .45-70 caliber, 32 ½-inch round barrel with fixed front and adjustable rear sight. Straight walnut stock with two barrel bands, sling swivels, stacking swivel and curved buttplate (no trap). Left side of stock cartouched with SWP/1888.
Condition: 1) Very good. Finish worn to a smooth mottled brown patina with light scratches and wear to the high spots. Small areas of pitting on the butt and barrel bands. Stock with no visible cartouche and with scattered chips, abrasions and bruises. Mechanically sound with a bright bore. 2) Poor. Not in firing condition with surface rust, lacking several lockplate screws, and with cracks in the stock. Lacking cleaning rod. Perfect for decoration or a restoration project.
