At the time, the Model 1873 Springfield Carbine was the primary firearm carried by the 7th Cavalry. Its performance at the battle has been the subject of much historical debate. While the .45-70 Government cartridge was powerful, the single-shot mechanism of the carbine placed the soldiers at a disadvantage compared to the rapid-fire weapons (such as lever-action Henry and Winchester repeating rifles) used by many of the Native American warriors. The slower rate of fire and the need to reload after every shot became critical factors in the 7th Cavalry's inability to hold off the superior numbers of their opponents.

Condition: Very good. Finish primarily a dark grey patina with signs of handling wear, age and patches of pitting. Scattered scuffs, dings and bruising present to wood. Some cracking and loss at butt. Replacement rear sight. Action good. Strong bore.
