British Westley Richards & Co. "Monkeytail" 1863 Breechloading Percussion Carbine.Unserialized, .45 caliber, 25-inch barrel with fixed front sight and folding rear sight. Blued finish. Top of barrel marked: WHITWORTH PATENT. Case-hardened hammer, lock and trigger. Lock stamped: 1863 and WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO. Checkered walnut straight stock and forearm. Sling swivel. Metal cleaning rod and buttplate. First Patented in 1858, the Westley Richards Capping Breech was arguably the most effective and safest Percussion breech loading system of all. It utilized an upward moving lever directly behind the barrel to open a chute that a fresh paper cartridge could be introduced into the chamber.
Condition: Very good. Retaining traces of finish, the balance a dark grey patina with signs of age, handling wear and patches of pitting. Scattered dings and scuffs present to wood. Action good. Lightly pitted bore.
