Berdan's C. Sharps New Model 1859 Breechloading Percussion Rifle.Serial no. 54901, .52 caliber, 30-inch barrel with fixed front sight and adjustable rear ladder sight. Blued and case-hardened finish. Top of barrel marked: NEW MODEL 1859. Lock stamped: C. SHARPS PAT. / OCT. 5TH 1852. Smooth walnut straight stock and fore-end. Three barrel bands and two sling swivels. Hinged patchbox to right side of stock. Crescent metal buttplate. Sold along with 18-inch socket bayonet.
Berdan's Sharps New Model 1859 rifle manufactured as part of a 2000 rifle contract executed by the Ordnance Department on January 27 and February 6, 1862 to arm the 1st and 2nd United States Sharpshooters Regiments. Composed of expert marksmen selected by Colonel Hiram S. Berdan, the two U.S.S.S. regiments fought with the Army of the Potomac for most of the Civil War. The Berdan Sharpshooter's M1859 Sharps Rifles were specially fitted with double set triggers and had angular socket bayonets. Most of the Berdan Sharps Rifles fall in the 54,374-57,574 serial range.
Condition: Very good. Finish primarily a dark grey patina with honest handling wear, age and patches of pitting. Noticeable scuffs, dings and bruising present to wood. Hairline crack to right side of stock, from upper tang to patchbox. Action functions. Moderately pitted bore.
