Description

Sharps New Model 1859 Percussion Rifle.
Serial no. 40040, .52 caliber, 30-inch round barrel with ladder rear and fixed front sight. Blued barrel, casehardened receiver, lock, breechblock, lever and trigger plate. Lug for saber type bayonet mounted near muzzle. Lock marked "R. S. LAWRENCE PAT. / APRIL 12TH 1859" and "C. SHARPS' PAT. / OCT. 5TH 1852". Top of barrel marked "SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG. CO. / HARTFORD, CONN.". Left side of breech marked "C. SHARPS PAT. / SEPT. 12 1848". Sight base marked "R. S. LAWRENCE / PATENTED / FEB. 15 1859". Oiled walnut stock with 3 barrel bands, patch box and metal buttplate.

Condition: Very good. Metal surfaces have worn to a smooth brown patina. Traces of case color remain. Stock with modest scratches and bruises. Former owner has etched initials on the left side of the wrist "F.E.H." Small crack just forward of the lever on the underside of the stock. Lacking upper sling loop. Excellent mechanical condition. Bore dirty but the rifling remains distinct.
