Sharps 1874 Old Reliable Falling Block Single Shot Heavy Barrel Rifle.Serial no. 99040 [upper tang and barrel], .45 caliber, 30-inch octagonal barrel with fixed front sight and folding rear ladder sight. Barrel marked of left side near frame CAL 45 2 1/2. Blued and case-hardened finish. Top of barrel marked: OLD RELIABLE SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN. Lock marked: C. SHARPS PAT. / OCT. 5TH 1852. Double set triggers. Smooth walnut straight stock and fore-end. Faint P marking on fore-end. Metal carbine buttplate. LB stamping on left side of buttstock enclosed in circle.
Condition: Very good. Retaining approximately 70-80% finish with noticeable areas of thinning, handling wear and patches of pitting. Heavy scuffs, dings and bruising to wood include period repair to left side of fore-end. Significant stress crack on heel [near buttplate] with some separations to each side, about 1 1/2-inch. Action crisp. Bright bore.
