Description

Rare Collis Breechloading Flintlock Rifle. Unserialized, approximately .70 caliber, 36 1/4-inch round, damascus barrel with dovetailed bead front and open rear sights. British proofs at breech. Border engraved hammer and frizzen. Engraved lock marked: Collis/Oxford. Nicely engraved triggerguard with vacant shield escutcheon. Triggerguard releases to spin open allowing access to the breech from underneath. Full length hardwood stock with checkered wrist. Slightly curved and engraved buttplate. Condition: Very good to fine as configured. This extremely rare, experimental rifle has a beautiful and smooth deep plum brown patina over all of the barrel except near the action where it fades to gray. Touch hole and lock showing little signs of use. Action is very crisp. The stock was lengthened at the butt possibly at the time of manufacture. The wood has scattered minor dents and a 10-inch repair on the right side half way down the barrel. The bore is strong and exceptionally clean.
