Winston Churchill Engraved Sharps Borchardt Single Shot Target Rifle with Tools.Serial no. 6676, 40 caliber [40 1 1/8] [40-50] Sharps Straight. 32-inch round barrel marked SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN. Sharps spirit level windage front sight and Sharps rear sight. OLD RELIABLE in a gold inlay. Top of breech marked W. CHURCHILL ENG. The muzzle and breech ends of the barrel are scroll engraved with gold band at each end. Both sides of receiver have hard rubber panels and are extensively engraved with foliate arabesque scrolls surrounding panel scenes with the right side displaying woodland scene detailing a running raised stag in gold. The left side shows a mountain scene with two detailed Big Horn sheep in the background and a detailed raised Big Horn sheep in gold with exquisite detail. Rubber panels are scroll engraved around the edges with the left panel having a large, intertwined double letters around the name H.C. KNOWLTON. Tang has correct Sharps Mid-Range vernier sight mounted. Trigger and safety are hand checkered. Highly figured deluxe Walnut checkered stock and fore-end. Nickel-plated buttplate. Gold oval escutcheon present; engraved PETE. All screws present are finely engraved. Overall a masterpiece from top to bottom. Together with a selection of reloading tools related to the rifle; including some examples marked Sharps Rifle Co. Cal 40 and another example marked 40 1 1/8. Accompanying literature includes; Formal Appraisal, 4 page letter from Carter Mounting Consulting Agency; prepared by well-known Expert J.R. La Rue, dated 12 November 2013. Also, a few brochures and pamphlets about Winston Churchill, Engraver and Sculptor. He is responsible for some great masterpieces from manufactures such as, Smith and Wesson, Colt, Winchester, Purdey, Holland and Holland to name a few. At the end of his two-page brochure, it states; "Winston Churchill continues to divide his time between engraving and sculpture, and joyfully considers the expression of his art to be a great adventure." One more piece of literature of interest, is the letter addressed to Mr. Charles A. Prentice from Winston Churchill from 1996, in it he writes "Well it gives me a warm ???? of happiness to hear of the joy that owning the old Sharps gives you.........I was working at AF at the time with the famous Josef Fugger. It was here that I fell in love with this centuries old "Arabesque" scroll. What you have is my early version of it!"
Condition: Excellent, as new after the engraving was done. Retains virtually all the added finish, with minor handling wear present. Wood is fine , retaining its finish with just minor handling marks. Bore bright. Tools with some wear and aging to them.
