Description

Very Nice. Likely Confederate Imported 577 Caliber M1853 Percussion Enfield Rifled Musket. There were actually more Enfields imported by the Federal government than .5 caliber muskets produced by Federal contractors during the war. Without doubt one of the most heavily used, and highly serviceable rifled muskets to see action on both sides. Dated 1862 with standard Crown/Tower marks on lock. Overall metal with generally smooth brown patina, with just some noteworthy pitting in the nipple/breech area. Crisp action, very good bore. Wood very nice with stockmaker's mark "Swinburn" on buttstock and light but fully legible JS/anchor in the wood behind the rear trigger guard tang. Wood overall very nice just showing honest wear and use with some scattered dents/bruises, minor. Complete and original in every respect including original ramrod and rear sight, and a strong candidate for Confederate import and use
