    Description

Very Fine Full Stock Percussion Pennsylvania Rifle by J. H. Johnston. Johnston worked in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, near Waynesboro, from the early 1830s to about 1860. This rifle is probably C. 1838 and represents the finest example of his work we've handled, for both quality and condition. 42", .53 caliber smoothbore barrel, octagon to sixteen flats to round and signed in script "J. H. Johnston" on the top flat. Percussion lock marked "Josh Golcher" in caps. Finely and deeply carved forestock moulding with typical Johnston opposing C scroll incised carving on cheek side. All carving very crisp. Large oval silver inlay on the cheek piece with exquisitely engraved spread wing eagle surmounting a shield. Four small pointed inlays on each side of the forestock, with beautifully engraved four piece patch box. Single screw brass side plate secured at each end by small wood screws. Silver wrist escutcheon with engraved border else plain. Notched rear sight, dovetailed brass blade front sight and original brass capped ramrod. Barrel with smooth dark patina, very nice. Engraved on the side flat of the barrel above the front portion of the side plate "Rankin H", significance unknown. Gun overall appears to be completely untouched showing just some very minor wear, commensurate with light honest use. A beautiful rifle in superb condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
