Description
An exceptional example of this most desirable Civil War rifled musket.
US Model 1861 Springfield Percussion Rifle-Musket..58 caliber, 40-inch barrel. Correct proof and date markings on barrel and breech [markings deep and crisp]. Lockplate marked 1862 [rear of hammer] and [eagle] / U.S. / SPRINGFIELD [forward of hammer]. Three barrel bands. A fine example of what is actually a very scarce gun in this condition. According to Flayderman's Guide, [9A-313], Made between 1861-1862, total quantity approximately 265,000. A substantial number also made under contract by various firms including Eagle Manufacturing Company, James D. Mowry, Norfolk by Welch, Providence Tool Company, Trenton among others. The model 1861 was the standard musket in use during the Civil War. Note: Sold previously by us on December 11, 2010, Dallas Signature Sale [Arms & Militaria Auction #6050].
Condition: Fine, all metal generally smooth and clean, with just a few spots with very light surface rust and dried grease, and one very small spot of pitting at the muzzle, the result of the bayonet being in place for many years. Stock also very good with good inspectors' cartouches including ESA. Just some honest wear and dents, with a very old light coat of varnish. Mechanically perfect, very crisp, with good bore. Includes the original bayonet, also in good condition with surface spots.
