Description
U.S. Colt Model 1861 Percussion Musket Dated 1863 I.D.'d to Soldier Whose Regiment Fought at Gettysburg.Unserialized, .58 caliber, 39-inch barrel with fixed front sight and folding rear sight. Lock marked: 1863 and U.S. / COLT'S PT. F A MFG CO. / HARTFORD, CT. V / P / (eagle head) proofs and STEEL stamped to left side of barrel. Smooth walnut straight stock with three barrel bands (each marked U) and sling swivels. Metal ramrod and U.S. buttplate. Underside of stock stamped: "123 N.Y.V. Co I JAB".
James A. Bassett (b. 1835) lived in Cambridge, New York. On September 4, 1862, he mustered into Company I, 123rd Regiment New York Infantry. He was wounded on May 3, 1863 at the Battle of Chancellorsville, likely during the flank attack by "Stonewall" Jackson. He mustered out on May 13, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. His unit fought at Gettysburg (Culp's Hill), although it is unknown whether Bassett recuperated in time to participate. The local newspapers did not report on the severity of his injury, simply stating "unknown".
Condition: Very good. Finish primarily a smooth grey patina with noticeable signs of handling wear, age and pitting. Scattered dings and scuffs present to wood. Action good. Moderately pitted bore.
