Description

Magnificent German Flintlock Jaeger Rifle C. 1760. Deeply rifled .58 caliber 27 3/8" swamped barrel signed in silver inlay "T*Arnold A*Weingartn*". Brass mounts, unmarked lock with the gun being in original flintlock configuration. Base at the wrist for a post rear sight which is now missing. Loop in front of middle ramrod pipe and large 'button' under butt for attaching a sling. Magnificent relief carving of the finest quality featuring a full figured buck (or elk), the raised cheek piece with a shield shaped mother of pearl and brass wire inlay. Functioning set trigger, sliding wooden patch box cover with brass trim, silver blade front sight, rear sight with elaborate base. Barrel with small sections of silver wire inlay near the muzzle and breech. Light wear overall with rich patina on the magnificent stock. Small repair to the front of the trigger guard with a small stable crack at the rear, both very minor. For both quality and condition an exceptional example of the gun from which the true Pennsylvania rifle evolved.
