Description
John Lyell & Co. Aberdeen Hammer Underlever Double Rifle.Serial no. 4400 [under barrels], .500 Nitro, 28-inch barrels with solid rib. Blued finish with case-hardening frame. Both sides of lockplate engraved JOHN LYELL & CO. Top of barrels near folding sights marked JOHN LYELL & CO. ABERDEEN. English cheekpiece. Level Flat Rib with express folding sights at 150 and 200 [plus one standing]. Fine scroll engraving throughout. Double triggers. Silvered oval escutcheon on stock. Checkered pistolgrip [horn cap] and splinter forearm with lever release. Sling eyes. Fitted with a bookend style buttplate, fine engraving adorns the screws and surroundings, with exposed checkering in between.
Please note: Underneath stamped on barrel breech flat with multiple [proofs], including [crown] over P, [crown] over V among others. Also the number 38 appears twice. [proof V] on receiver/frame flats. Gun weights approximately 9 lbs.
Condition: Fine as configured and refinished, with moderate handling and fine marks from handling. Some moderate scuffs present to barrels and wear near breech. Overall fine scratches. Case-hardening present, with added lacquering, some areas are vibrant. Fine spots of minor pitting to protected areas. Wood with numerous bumps and mars present. Wood has been refinished. Horn cap with rim loss. Buttstock with minor wear. Bores excellent, action crisp. Collection of a Southern Gentleman.
