Description

Identified U.S. Springfield Model 1863 Percussion Musket Attributed To George H. Schwenk, Durrell's Pennsylvania Light Artillery, Battery D, With Consignor Research Material.

Unserialized, .58 caliber, 40-inch round barrel with fixed front sight and rear folding sight [base only, no ladder]. Lockplate marked U.S. SPRINGFIELD and [eagle] forward of hammer and dated 1863 [rear of hammer]. Smooth hardwood straight stock with sling swivels and three barrel bands. Metal ramrod, triggerguard and US stamped buttplate. Cartouche to left side of stock. This Civil War infantry arm is identified to George H. Schwenk, who served with the Pennsylvania Volunteers, Independent Battery D. The left side of the stock is carved and highlighted in red paint G.H. SCHWENK, providing a direct period-style identification to the soldier. An honest Civil War musket with a personalized stock and associated research, representing a named artilleryman from a Pennsylvania Independent Battery. George enlisted on January 25, 1864 and died on October 17, 1864.

Accompanying the musket is a group of related research materials, including internet research on Schwenk's service, regimental history excerpts, and photocopies of period documents. These include a Supplement Declaration from his widow Catherine Schwenk's pension application, a Declaration of Recruit, Volunteer Enlistment papers, Death Certificate and a response from the Adjutant General's Office regarding pension matters. While the documents are photocopies, they provide useful historical context and support the identification.

Condition: Fair overall. The lockplate retains a gray patina, while the barrel shows a heavy, dark patina. The stock exhibits significant wear with nicks, mars, and scuffs throughout, along with the carved identification on the left side. The cartouche area shows wear consistent with handling and age. Metal surfaces show age and use, and the musket presents as-found example. Action good, bore dark as expected.
