Great Untouched Northampton County Pennsylvania Rifle By P & D Moll Hellertown, Pa. C. 1835 - 37 Signed in script on a 5/16" X 4 1/4" brass plaque inlaid on the top flat of the barrel near the breech, which is characteristic of rifles by cousins Peter & David Moll, lineal descendants of master Allentown rifle maker John Moll I. 40 1/8" rifled .50 caliber full octagonal barrel, 15/16" across the flats. Barrel overall with smooth deep dark patina, with just some pitting at the teardrop shaped percussion bolster, excellent bore. Full maple stock with very nice rich patina and excellent natural curl in the buttstock. Classic slender, graceful eastern Pennsylvania architecture. There is an old chip at the toe of the butt, with the end of the toe plate also broken and the toe of the butt plate now curled around the chip, easily restored. Original percussion lock by Tryon Merrick & Co. with scroll engraving on lock and hammer.All brass furniture, the forend cap open at the end as is typical of this school. Multi faceted ramrod pipes The lower pipe with extension abuts a brass wear plate that extends to the front of the trigger guard. Wear plate with engraved decoration at the edges. Trigger guard, also typical of this school, with pronounced shoulder at the front. 4" decorative brass toe plate with floral rosettes engraved around the screw heads. Classic stylized fleur de lis patchbox finial unique to this school. Edges of finial and lid with decorative line engraving. 1/16" brass strips are inlaid on either side of the lid with the panel between the strips and the lid filled with black enamel. Buttplate with flat extension, again typical of this school. The patchbox release in a slot in the buttplate. Multi-tiered cheekpiece with 16 point silver star inlaid inside of a brass oval, with the area surrounding the star displaying the same black enamel treatment as the patchbox. The rear lock bolt plate composed of intricate scrolls with two piercings filled with black enamel. Front lock bolt plate with rudimentary scroll at each side. Oval silver wrist escutcheon and pointed oval silver wedge escutcheons with decorative line engraving. Interestingly the wedges do no pass all the way through the forestock. Line carved forestock moulding and retains what appears to be the original ramrod.
A really wonderful rifle, in superb untouched condition, by iconic makers from a most desirable school of work.
