Description
Confederate Richmond Percussion Rifled Musket with Original Sling.Unserialized, .58 caliber, 40-inch round barrel. Iron mountings with brass buttplate and forend cap. Barrel markings with V P and eaglehead. Three barrel bands present. Considered the Type II variation with the C.S. above Richmond, VA. lockplate marked forward of hammer and the date 1862 at rear. Ramrod present. Walnut stock. Fitted with a correct, original Confederate leather mounted linen rifle sling. [150] marked in black ink on buttplate, possibly an institution designation marking.
According to Flayderman's Guide; "Made immediately after the Confederate government takeover of the armory. These will also bring a premium value over the more often seen styles." Made between 1861-1865. Total quantities are unknown, but made in larger numbers than all other Confederate longarms manufactured during the Civil War.
Provenance: Ex. Beverly Dubose Jr. Collection; Atlanta History Center 1984.
Private Collection.
Condition: Very good to fine considering its age; better than average. Breech near tang with moderate bruises/dents. Numerous dings / mars and some stress present to stock as expected. Metal parts with patina and pitting overall. Action good, bore dark as expected.
