Description
Confederate Imported E. P. Bond .577 Caliber Percussion Rifled Musket. Lock marked "E. P. Bond London". All correct brass furniture, three iron bands securing the barrel, with proper British proofs at breech. The butt plate tang bears the hand engraved number "8199" and there is a "JS" over an anchor stamped on the stock behind the trigger guard extension. This mark is the approval stamp of John Southgate, who was employed as a government arms viewer on weapons destined for shipment to the Confederacy. The ramrod, although period and correct is probably not original to this weapon. The rifle is also missing both sling swivels and the rear sight. Gun overall is very nice with all metal exhibiting a smooth gray patina with just some light pitting at the breech. Stock with nice patina exhibiting some wood loss from firing behind the hammer and a nicely done old repair to a hairline at the buttplate toe. Mechanically perfect, the bore is now smooth. The butt plate tang number indicates this rifle was in the hands of the Confederacy by mid 1862. Nice, totally honest and original example of this very scarce and desirable Confederate longarm.Auction Info
