Description

Bronze Lantaka Swivel Cannon on Wooden Field Carriage, c. 18th-19th Century.

A substantial bronze lantaka-type swivel cannon, measuring approximately 44-inches in overall length with an estimated one-inch bore. Cast in the traditional form associated with the Philippines and surrounding maritime regions, the cannon displays decorative moldings and ringed reinforcement along the barrel, culminating in a flared muzzle. The bronze surface has developed a deep, even green patina, characteristic of prolonged age and exposure. It is mounted on a heavily weathered wooden carriage that retains its original iron fittings and overall form despite extensive age-related degradation.

These small, portable cannons, known as lantakas, were commonly used across Southeast Asia aboard ships and fortifications for close defense, signaling, and ceremonial firing. Their elegant casting and enduring presence reflect both indigenous craftsmanship and the blending of European artillery traditions within the region.

Condition: Good overall for its type and period. The bronze barrel shows a rich, stable green patina with areas of oxidation and surface wear. The touch hole remains open, exhibiting light encrustation consistent with age. The wooden carriage is extremely weathered with heavy cracking, splitting, and losses to the wheels and side panels, though the general structure is preserved. Remnants of oxidized iron hardware and chain remain attached, adding authenticity and historical character. A highly evocative example of a 19th-century Southeast Asian swivel gun in mounting, displaying both archaeological integrity and visual presence.
