Description

Bronze Lantaka Swivel Cannon on Wooden Field Carriage, c. 18th-19th Century.

An attractive bronze lantaka-type swivel cannon, approximately 37-inches in overall length with an estimated one-inch bore. Cast in a form characteristic of the Philippines and wider Malay archipelago, the piece features traditional ring moldings along the barrel and decorative reinforcement around the breech. The patina displays an appealing sea-green tone, indicative of long and stable aging. It is mounted on a heavily weathered wooden carriage that retains its original iron fittings and overall form despite extensive age-related degradation.

These weapons were widely produced throughout Southeast Asia for shipboard defense, coastal protection, and ceremonial use. The combination of bronze craftsmanship and locally adapted design demonstrates both European influence and indigenous innovation during the colonial period.

Condition: Good for its type and age. The bronze barrel shows an attractive aged patina with scattered oxidation and surface wear consistent with long outdoor exposure. The touch hole is neatly closed with what appears to be a contemporary screw fitting. The wooden carriage exhibits advanced weathering with cracking and splitting to the wheels and rails but remains somewhat complete and stable though fragile. A length of rusted iron chain remains attached to the carriage. Together, cannon and carriage present an evocative, well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian maritime or field defense piece.
