Description
British Tower 1780 Brown Bess Flintlock Musket with Bayonet.Unserialized, approximately .69 caliber, 41-inch barrel with fixed front sight and bayonet lug. Various British proofs to top of barrel. Re-barrel date of 1832 on barrel near breech [left side]. Lock marked: TOWER / 1780 and (crown) / GR. Smooth walnut straight stock with three barrel bands and two sling swivels. L N stamped to right side of stock. Metal ramrod and buttplate. 17-inch socket bayonet. Please note: barrel liner was installed in the stock to accommodate the smaller .69 caliber barrel as opposed to the original .75 caliber barrel. An interesting example of a musket design that remained in use for over a hundred years with various incremental changes in its design, the British Army's go to musket from 1722-1838. Note: It is a possibility that the re-barreled occurred in the hands of the French as the stock appears to be French in design.
After further examination, please note the following; Since there is no [broad arrow] proof it probably came out of the British East India stores. A lot of equipment from there saw use during the Napoleonic Wars. It may have been a damaged, battlefield pickup that the French rebuilt and put in a French 1777 musket stock. While the 1832 barrel date tells us the year it was re-barreled, there is no way to know by whom except by the proofs shown. The work was performed in an arsenal (as evidenced by the Roman numerals in various places) and the construction of the stock liner is a truly impressive feat given the tools of the time. An interesting, historical piece; and another one where you wish it could talk. Please bid accordingly.
Condition: Very good as configured. Finish primarily a bright grey patina with scattered signs of handling wear and patches of pitting. Scuffs, dings and bruises present to wood. Action good. Strong bore.
