Description

British Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle-Musket, Tower 1862, Identified to Company I, 33rd Massachusetts Infantry.

Unserialized, .577 caliber, 39-inch barrel and visible proof marks near the breech. Adjustable rear sight. Lockplate dated 1862 / TOWER forward of hammer and [crown] over V.R. rear of lockplate. Metal ramrod present. Walnut stock. Brass buttplate and triggerguard. This example is a Civil War import with clear Massachusetts state ownership markings, the brass buttplate tang stamped "I / MASS / 33," identifying issue to Company I of the 33rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

The 33rd Massachusetts served with distinction in the Western Theater, including operations in Kentucky and Tennessee and later participation in the Atlanta Campaign. Identified arms to specific regiments, and especially to company level, are increasingly scarce, making this a particularly desirable example with direct unit attribution.

Condition: Overall good, service-used condition. The lock retains an attractive gray patina with clear markings, while the barrel shows darker areas of oxidation along with remnants of old dried oil or grease. The brass buttplate has a mellow aged patina with a clearly legible "I / 33rd / MASS" stamp. The stock shows typical handling wear, including scattered dings and dents, with minor losses concentrated along the edges of the ramrod channel. Minor splits near lockplate. Heavy freckling, pitting to bands and ramrod. Action is good, bore is dark but remains serviceable.
