Description
An Early Flintlock American Long Rifle Inscribed Silas Taylor.Unserialized, .61 caliber, 42 1/8-inch octagonal barrel with front blade and rear notch sight. Maple stock with raised wooden patchbox; raised cheekpiece to the left, very well formed and incorporated to buttstock. There is some nice raised carving surrounding the upper tang. Brass sideplate is engraved SILAS TAYLOR. No info is available on Silas Taylor, although the name surfaces, we cannot associate with a particular one. Early brass furniture present. Ramrod present [repaired]. Gun measures approximately 57-inches overall.
Please note: Previous auction house stated that their consignor had attributed this rifle to the "Huffman School", which was located in Shenandoah Co., Virginia, during the 1760s; we cannot confirm nor deny this claim. Sold at a major auction house in the Midwest in 2021.
Condition: Very good as reconverted and presented. Barrel retains an overall mottled patina, mostly dark with with hints on brown. Brass furniture with toning and light patina. Maple stock wit numerous marks, stress cracks and bruising; repairs present. Moderate repair to stock front of lockplate. Marred screws. Gun functions, bore dark. Collection of a Southern Gentleman.
