A German Wheellock Sporting Rifle, Stamped with Armoury Mark of the Princes of Salm-Reifferscheidt, Dated 1649.


Approximately .67 caliber, the 31 1/2-inch octagonal barrel with a slight single fuller to the folding rear sight and dovetailed sight. Dated 1649 [stamped] on the top of the barrel. The marking [IS] with a [key] struck in two places at the root of the barrel. The lock with smooth bright finish fitted with external wheel, the marking [IS] also repeated on the lock plate. The spring-loaded pan cover has a release button, set trigger. Fullstock figured walnut with finely chiseled scalloping. Inlays of engraved and blackened bone with renderings of different animals, including; leaping stags, wolves, hares and canines, on the butt and the side opposite the lock. The lid of the patch box with a figurative female figure and marked 1650 [date]". The butt cap fitted in green horn, engraved with the number [33]. Together with original wooden ramrod with bone cap engraving and a threaded iron sleeve. Overall length of this detailed and highly embellished wheellock is 42-inches overall.

Please note; The bottom of the butt is marked/stamped with the armory mark of the Princes of Salm-Reifferscheidt, together with the number [6] and a brass collection number attached which reads 124.

Condition: Fine for its age. Bright gray patina overall to barrel and iron components. Bone with proper aging and form. Minor scuffs and bruising to wood. Action functions, bore ok.
