Description
Rare & Documented Winchester Model 1876, One of One Thousand Lever Action Rifle.Serial no. 10015, 45/60 caliber, 26-inch octagonal barrel full octagon with full-length magazine are blued and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and trigger are color casehardened. Top of barrel reads: WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860. One of One Thousand is engraved in script letters on the top of the barrel flat between the rear sight and receiver with a scroll-work flourish at the muzzle end, scrollwork on a punch dot background on lower barrel flats below the marking and at the muzzle. Casehardened frame. Silver bands present near receiver and muzzle on barrel. Set trigger. Stocks are highly figured, fancy grade walnut with high polish finish with fine checkering and the bottom of the pistol grip has a horn inlay. The left side of the lower tang is marked "XXXX" and "822 [assembly number]". Fitted with a horn buttplate. Interesting to note that based on the provenance and paperwork provided with the gun, it appears this gun was found in Australia at some point in the 1960's. It has since changed hands a few times.
Please note: This rifle is one of only 51 "One of One Thousand" rifles manufactured in the Model 1876 series. Worth noting, in the book by George Madis; The Winchester Book, 1 of 1000, he writes "This rifle was shipped from the factory on June 8, 1880. Serial Number 10,014, shown here, is one of a series beginning with number 10,013 and ending with number 10,018. Shown elsewhere in this chapter is number 10,018, now in the Winchester Museum in Cody...." he also states "All One of One Thousand and One of One Hundred rifles which this writer has observed have the extra finish walnut, set triggers, fancy walnut of 1X to 4X grade, color case hardening and inside parts were finished more than standard arms. Serial numbers of the models 76 in this special gun run from number 710 and upward".
Accompanying the gun is the Factory letter from the Cody Firearms Museum confirming configuration. The letter states; Type; Rifle, Caliber; 45/60, Barrel Type; Octagonal, Barrel Length; 26 inches, Trigger; Set, Pistol grip; Checkered, Casehardened, 1 of 1000, and received in warehouse on June 07, 1880 and Shipped from warehouse on June 08, 1880, Order number 20253. Also included is correspondence between R.W. Stagg and Winchester......highlights include a 3-page letter from Mr. R.W. Stagg of Victoria, Australia to Winchester Gun Museum Curator, T.E. Hall, detailing his "find" with detailed specifications dated 14th October, 1966 and asking for information, if any, from the Factory Records; T.E. Hall, Curator responds with a letter on Gun Museum letterhead detailing the information available on the 1 of 1000, confirming its specifications.
Condition: Very good to fine for this model; casehardened traces on the frame, overall retains 30-40% bluing on barrels with scattered pitting and corrosion. Magazine tube has a mellow smooth patina overall. Please note, the engraving on the barrel and receiver show well. Stock and forearm appear original and retain 50-60%% polish. Scattered wear and handling marks present with minor scuffs, cracking. Buttplate, a possible replacement. Checkering on the stock and forearm fine, with handling, scuffs and wear. Action good, bore good. Collection of a Southern Gentleman.
