New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Lever Action Carbine.

Serial no. 103 [frame under stock, inside buttplate and buttplate screws], .41 caliber, 21-inch octagonal barrel with fixed front sight and adjustable rear sight. Blued finish. Top of barrel marked: NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB 14, 1854. Brass receiver. Case-hardened hammer and lever. Base of receiver stamped "37" (perhaps a rack number). Smooth walnut straight stock. Crescent brass buttplate.
According to Flayderman around 1,000 manufactured. The New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Lever Action Carbine represents an important early development in the history of repeating firearms. This firearm is directly linked to the pioneering designs of Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson, who would later go on to form the famous Smith & Wesson firearm company. Before that partnership, they founded the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, which was eventually reorganized as the New Haven Arms Company in 1857.

Condition: Very good. Finish primarily a smooth grey age patina with scattered signs of handling wear, age and fine patches of pitting. Wood retains approximately 70% original varnish. Action good. Bright bore.
