Rare Captured Japanese Used Geweer M. 95
(Dutch Mannlicher) Bolt Action Rifle, Leather Sling and Bayonet
With Army Officers' Shin-Gunto.The group includes: 1.) Dutch Mannlicher M. 95 bolt action rifle. Serial no. 3497c (on barrel, last two numbers on rear sight, barrel band, forward of the magazine), bolt mismatched, 6.5 x 53mmR caliber, 31-inch barrel with adjustable rear and fixed front sights. Left side of receiver stamped "STEYR 1905". Hardwood stock with two sling swivels and metal butt plate. The right side of the butt has a recess for a sling loop. This leather sling is stamped "CW / N / 9 17 / 1 K", probably the original Dutch property mark but also has a cloth tag sewn to the sling near the upper band with kanji characters, likely the Japanese unit marking [intact since gun was captured]. 2.) Dutch M.1895 cavalry bayonet (second variation), 9 3/4-inch double-edged, blued blade marked "HEMBRUG" on the reverse ricasso and with a few additional Dutch proof marks (no Japanese markings visible). Hooked quillon stamped "KAR" and serial numbered (not to rifle), pommel likewise stamped. Complete with correct, unmarked leather scabbard. 3.) Japanese officers' shin-gunto, 23 3/4-inch blade, with unsigned tang. Brass tsuba. Cloth-wrapped ray skin handle with chrysanthemum menuki. Maroon/brown officers' tassel. Brown leather wrapped scabbard with one mounting ring. Note: These three items were captured by Lt. Charles A. Black in New Guinea, (6 years before he married Shirley Temple, the love of his life). His actions on that day, got him awarded the Silver Star, The Navy Department press release detailing the ceremony of the Silver Star reads; "....The Medal was awarded by Vice Admiral T.C. Kincaid, USN, Commander Allied Naval Forces,........for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy in New Guinea. While on a scouting mission, Japanese soldiers were lured into a trap through the cooperative efforts of natives. In a sharp skirmish, Lieut. Black killed one and he and his party captured two others. Information from prisoners resulted directly in the destruction of enemy craft." This historical lot is being sold along with a photocopy of his typed Secretary of the Navy citation letter and an original Navy press release and photograph showing his award ceremony.
Provenance: From the Estate of Shirley Temple Black.
Condition: 1.) Very good. Metal parts with an overall dark patina with uniform light pitting; stock with the usual light bruises and scratches and some vice marks; action a bit still but functions properly; strong rifling. 2.) Good. Blade retaining traces of the original blue with scattered surface rust; hilt with moderate to heavy surface rust; scabbard worn but complete, supple and in serviceable condition. 3.) Good. The blade is dull and mottled; the leather covering on the scabbard is worn and a bit dry.
