Description
CANAANITE. Middle Bronze Age, circa 1600-1200 BCE. Bronze votive figure of Ba'al. Standing 4.175 inches (10.6 cm) tall, the male figure stands with stumpy arms outstretched and feet together; he wears a short conical hat, some sort of wrapping around his shoulders and a broad belt. See Ora Negbi, Canaanite Gods In Metal (Tel Aviv, 1976), plate 14 for a run of similar figurines; also, Chronicles Of The Land (Israel Museum, 2013) page 46, plate 10 for a Ba'al figurine with a similar conical hat. Ba'al, a storm god, was the chief male deity of the early Canaanites and other Western Semitic peoples, responsibility for fertility and growth. The earliest Hebrews may have used Ba'al as another name for their god Yahweh; however, by the time of Moses, Ba'al was regarded as a demonic rival of Yahweh. In the 9th century BCE, Jezebel, the Phoenician wife of King Ahab, encouraged the worship of Ba'al even as she persecuted the priests of Yahweh. This led to a famous confrontation with the prophet Elijah on Mount Carmel:
I Kings 18: "(25)And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under. (26) And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made."
