Description
PHOENICIA. Persian-Roman period, circa 6th-2nd centuries BCE. Terracotta head of Astarte. Standing 7.9 inches (20 cm) tall, hollow, wheel-thrown and of circular cross-section, the goddess is shown wearing a distinctive semi-conical headdress topped with a circular "button," the top and sides detailed with incised parallel lines and diagonal hatch marks; her long face framed by the headgear and small locks of hair poking out from underneath it, her nose long and straight, her eyes outlined and the irises pierced through to the interior, lips formed into a slight smile. Intact, light tan glaze over red terracotta, with moderate mineralized encrustation inside and out.From a New York collection, acquired in Lebanon, circa 1980s.
