Description

GREECE. Classical-Hellenistic era, circa 5th-4th centuries BCE. Silver alloy bowl. Round, 4.5 inches (12 cm) in diameter, of simple, hemispherical form. The austere form and lack of heavy ornament characteristic of the early Classical era, the bowl is shaped from a single heavy sheet of silver and expertly worked, with broad, slightly concave lip with a decorative incised line. Light oxidation overall, a few small areas of light corrosion and green-red deposits. Possibly used for administering medicine (silver was thought to have healing properties and is hypo-allergenic).

From The Living Torah Museum Collection; acquired from Time Machine Company (David Liebert).
