Description
JUDAEA. Hellenistic - Roman era, circa 300 BCE -100 CE. Stone mortar and pestle. Shaped from gray sandstone, the spouted bowl (mortar) is 6.75 inches (17 cm) in diameter and stands 3.5 inches (9 cm) tall on its three feet; the ovoid pestle is of similar stone and is 3 inches long. The exterior of the mortar and three ovoid feet are decorated with geometric motifs.From The Living Torah Museum Collection; ex Amphora Coins, acquired from Amphora Coins (David Hendin).
The mortar and pestle are among mankind's oldest implements, used for preparation of food, medicines, pigments, unguents, and incense. The example is of a refined form that entered use in the Holy Land the Hellenistic (circa 300 BC) and remained in use through the early Roman period.
