Description

ISRAELITE. Iron Age II B-C, circa 925-586 BC. Bronze stamp seal with inscription. Ovoid, pierced seal approximately .5 X .4 inches (12.8 X 11.5 mm) across the face and .33 inches (8.5 mm) deep, the face bearing a Paleo-Hebrew inscription reading ara / Zkr ("Ara, son of Zachar"). Areas of corrosion and green cuprite encrustation, the inscription quite clear. An extremely rare seal type with two Biblical names.

From The Living Torah Museum Collection; ex Archaeological Center Auction 17 (1997), lot 265.

The name Ara is found in I Chronicles chapter 7, verse 38 ("And the sons of Jether; Jephunneh, and Pispah, and Ara"), while Zachar is an abbreviated form of the well- known Biblical name Zachariah.
