Description

EGYPTO-CANAANITE. New Kingdom, time of Seti I (circa 1294-1279 BCE). Bi-faceted bronze seal ring. Found in Israel, this remarkable piece is a rectangular white steatite plaque seal 20mm X 13mm attached to a bronze ring. The seal bears (on the interior surface) the hieroglyphic cartouche of Seti I (reading "ra men m'at"), one of the most famous Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, father to the "Exodus Pharaoh" Ramesses II; the other side as a decorative motive of two birds and a floral scroll. The seal intact with minor chipping, the ring heavily encrusted and patinated, broken and repaired at attachment points to seal. See Flinders-Petrie pl. XXIX 4 for similar plaque with cartouche of Seti I.

From the Living Torah Museum Collection; ex Archaeological Center #40 (Tel Aviv, 4 April 2007), lot 489.

Seti I was a strong ruler who reestablished pharaohnic authority after the chaotic period following the reign of Akhenaten. However his reign was relatively short, between 15 and 11 years by most accounts. He is known to have commissioned several stele and large statues of himself, although most or all of these were finished by his more famous son, Ramesses II. Seti features in several novels and motion pictures as the pharaoh who ordered the killing of all Hebrew first-born male children, as recounted in Exodus 1:22, and whose sister pulled Moses from the Nile and raised him as her own son.
