Description
CANAANITE. Early Bronze Age, circa 3000-2300 BCE. Bronze 'epsilon' axe head. Of crescent form with three attachment points to haft, the terminals pierced for mounting; the bronze blade is 7.75 inches (19 cm) in length and 3.25 inches (8 cm)high, with a green patina and earthen encrustation. Two small ancient holes on bottom fin, two recent drill holes on central fin.From The Living Torah Museum Collection; ex Archaeological Center Auction no. 47 (Tel Aviv, 1 April 2010), lot 261.
This type of axe, termed an "epsilon" due to its shape resembling the Greek letter, originated in ancient Egypt during the copper age (circa 5,000-3,000 BCE) and found wide popularity throughout the fertile crescent. It could have been used as a tool, a weapon, or sacrificial implement.
