Description

Regulation US M1889 Cavalry Officer's Dress Helmet Identified to the 9th U.S. Cavalry. The helmet exhibits all the correct original fittings, including yellow worsted aiguillette, brass chain chinstrap, plume, etc. The eagle front plate displays what appears to be the absolutely original silver numeral 9, representing the 9th US Cavalry. The 9th Cav was originally formed in 1866 as an all black regiment, one of several that subsequently became known as "Buffalo Soldiers." All fittings retain most of the original gilt, the aiguillette also in about perfect condition. The exterior body of the helmet also about perfect with the interior showing obvious signs of honest wear and use. Inspected, dated 1899, and a paper tag showing what is apparently the original owner's name. This helmet clearly saw service, with every indication that it's current configuration is as issued, rather than being assembled of surplus parts, as is the case with most of these helmets. A rare helmet in wonderful condition.
