Description

Lot Five Identified.

U.S. Artillery Model Colt Single Action Army Revolver.

Serial no. 5211 [frame], 8165 [triggerguard], 137637 [cylinder] and 73410 [butt], .45 caliber, 5 1/2-inch barrel with fixed front sight and frame notch rear sight. Blued and case-hardened finish. Top of barrel marked: COLTS PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. Two-line, two-date patent and U.S. to left side of frame. Smooth walnut one-piece grip. The grip clearly show the cartouche of Rinaldo A. Carr under the year date of 1903. This frame, by serial number 5211 dates it to 1878.
Sold along with copy of factory letter dated March 16, 2004, confirming frame serial number, caliber and finish; barrel and stocks "Not Listed". Also states that the revolver was in a shipment of 200 that were shipped to the U.S. Government Officer and to the Address of the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts on June 16, 1903. Remarks added to the letter read: "The original records pertaining to this revolver were lost or destroyed many years ago. However, our records do indicate the return of this revolver for refurbishing and subsequent reshipment as noted below. It is of further interest to note that the majority of the revolvers received during this time frame had 5 1/2" barrels."
Another extensive 3-page letter from John Kopec is included which talks about this 5211 falling within the "Lot Five", which was the principle lot from which many of the revolvers which were issued to the 7th Cavalry. The Kopec letter, in great detail, breaks down almost all components of this fabulous gun and takes time to address all numbers stamped on it since refurbished. The letter ends with the following statement; "The subject revolver #5211 is mentioned on page 271 of our Cavalry and Artillery book as being extant from Lot Five. We find no evidence of purposeful fakery on this fine Artillery revolver, [signed] John A. Kopec". The letter will be available online as it is too much to cover in the text.

Condition: Very good to fine for this model as configured and refurbished. Barrel retains 50-60% finish, cylinder about 40-50%, frame and hammer with dark dull traces of case-hardening, the balance all being a dark silver/brown look to it. Most of the overall finish also has spots of pitting and peppering. Grips with dings and scratches present to wood, cartouche marks light but complete and pronounced. Mechanically sound, bore is good with some spots present. An overall gem with great history and pedigree.
