Description
Senior Captain Texas Ranger Gold Badge Belonging to Clint Peoples.40mm, gold wash over silver. Constructed from a Mexican 1947 or 1948 issue five peso coin which has been hammered slightly convex and voided to create the Texas "Lone Star" central motif. The badge is engraved on the obverse CLINT PEOPLES / SR. CAPT / TEXAS RANGERS, the letters highlighted with black paint and enhanced with additional floral accents. The reverse still retains traces of the die struck 5 peso coin and features a hinged pin and barrel catch for mounting. Sold together with a notarized letter tracing ownership of this badge back to Captain Peoples, ".......this personalized Texas Ranger Badge was obtained from his estate. This badge and several other items were sold by his daughter Donna Jean Peoples McClendon through Ranger Peoples' good friend Leo Bradshaw, and became the center point of my Clint Peoples Collection." Signed and dated.
Clinton Thomas Peoples was born in Bridgeport, Texas, on August 25, 1910. During the Conroe oil boom, he served as a deputy sheriff, later becoming chief deputy. Governor Miriam "Ma" Ferguson appointed him as a Special Texas Ranger to oversee the state's four horse racing tracks.
In 1941, Peoples joined the Texas Department of Public Safety as a highway patrolman and became a Texas Ranger in 1946, assigned to Headquarters Company in Austin. He was promoted to Captain of Company F in 1953 and later handled high-profile cases involving Billie Sol Estes, the Maceo brothers, the La Grange Chicken Ranch, and George Parr.
In 1969, he became Senior Ranger Captain and transferred to Austin. After retiring in 1974, he was appointed U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Texas by President Nixon, serving for 14 years.
Condition: Fine, moderate toning; displaying little wear from use.
