Outlaw Jesse James Owned Manhattan Pocket Revolver with Letter From Stella & Jesse E. James.

Serial no. 64240, approximately 5-inch octagonal barrel, .36 caliber. 5-shot cylinder. Originally blued finish with case-hardened frame. Top of barrel reads [two-lines] MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO. NEWARK N.J. / PATENTED MARCH 8, 1864. Walnut grips. Manufactured between 1859 to 1868. Also called the Series IV, Navy Type.

Sold with two important letters regarding authenticity of the revolver. The first dated January 15, 1950. "TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, I, Stella James, daughter-in-law of Jesse James, the Missouri Outlaw and my husband, Jesse Edward James, son of Jesse James, do hereby state an d affirm the pistol we are about to describe was used by outlaw Jesse James during the riad on the Russellville, Kentucky, Bank, several years after the close of the civil war. / This is a .36 caliber pistol, percussion type, Manhattan Arms, Serial 64240 on-all parts, and Frank James told us that this gun was used by Jesse James as described herein. / We part with this weapon with great reluctance but also with great admiration for Carl W. = Breihan, who was most instrumental in disproving the claims of the faker J. Frank Dalton to his being Jesse James. Frank James was a good friend of Mr. Breihan's grandmother, Katie Breihan, who worked at the American Hotel when Frank James resided there." / Signed, Stella E. James / Jesse E. James.
The second notarized letter, "TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Know ye all men, here presents, that I, Carl W. Breihan, 4939 Mattis Road, St. Louis, Mo., do state and affirm as fallows: / WHEREAS, the .36 caliber, percussion type, Manhattan Arms, revolver, serial #64240 on all parts, was given to the said Carl W. Breihan jointly by Jesse Edwards James, son of the outlaw, Jesse Woodson James, and Stella M. James, wife of the said Jesse Edwards James.... / WHEREAS, said pistol was given to said Carl W/ Breihan for his three years of work, time, and expense in exposing J. Frank Dalton and his claim to be Jesse Woodson James, the Missouri outlaw, and in appreciation by the undersigned names on said statement dated January 15, 1950, at Los Angeles, California...." [signed Carl W. Breihan]. / NOTARY: witness our hand and seal this 18 day of July, 1981...................[notary seal, state of Missouri]. Also included is a third letter from Carl Breihan to Nelson A. Faerber, dated 1984 regarding affidavits coming his way from the James pistol he just bought.

Jesse James born on September 5, 1847 and killed April 3, 1882 was a bank and train robber in the Old West, he is best known as the leading member of the James-Younger gang of outlaws.

Condition: Very good, gun has an overall smooth gray patina with age and handling wear. Grips, no varnish remains and have shrunk a bit, but just have handling wear with some bumps and nicks. Action functions, bore ok. Nelson A. Faerber Collection.
