Description
Martially Marked Smith and Wesson Model 3 Schofield, 2nd Model Single Action Revolver with San Francisco Police History.Serial no. 7755, 45 Schofield cal., 7-inch barrel [keyhole shape] with half-moon front sight and fixed rear sight. Right side of the barrel lug marked +SCHOFIELD'S PATS JUNE 20TH. 71. APR. 22D. 73 +. Left side marked with two-line S&W patent dates. Blued finish with smooth walnut grips with inspector cartouche present [CW]. Buttstrap marked US along with the serial number, 7755. Various inspector marks present overall including letters W & P under barrel. [7755 / P] and [W] back of cylinder. [P / W] inside cylinder housing area. Top of backstrap stamped "181" indicating it is one of the San Francisco Police revolvers.
Together also with S&W letter from Roy Jinks stating: "We have researched your Smith & Wesson Model 3 Schofield Second Model, United States Government Contract, caliber .45 S&W Schofield, revolver in company records which indicate that your handgun, with serial number 7755, was shipped from our factory on April 11, 1877, and delivered to United States Government, National Armory, Springfield, MA. The records indicate that this handgun was shipped with a 7 inch barrel, blue finish, and smooth walnut grips......" [signed] Roy G. Jinks.
Also included is research related to SF S&W Police guns; 2 photocopies of Man At Arms articles, both by Charles W. Pate. Extensive research has been done by him on these special guns and should be read through to educate yourself on these rare and seldom seen guns. In both articles, he has photographed and detailed many examples with similar and identical markings.
This gun previously sold in 2005 at Amoskeag Auction which featured the great Smith and Wesson collection of Gary Garbrecht.

Private Collection.
Condition: Fine for this model. The frame retains approximately 60-70% finish overall with some flaking giving it a mellow gray/brown patina. Grips fine as presented with handling and storage wear, crisp "CW" cartouche marking. Mechanically fine, bore bright.
