Description

Gaming or Gambler's Set in Fitted Wooden Chest. 18.75" x 14" x 9.5" mahogany handled-chest with top tray and two sliding drawers. The top has a silver inlay cartouche of a trotting horse. The top tray and inside of the lid carry over the horse racing motif. The inside of the lid has a color scene on cloth of thoroughbreds awaiting the start of the race (discolored). The contents of the top tray include: four trays of gaming chips (mostly made of mother-of-pearl or bone-like material), a hinged wooden box containing five horse racing stickpins, a hinged mother-of-pearl card case (minor loss at top edge), a tin box with horse racing scene on lid and two portrait pendants, a gaming token and two ball bearings inside, a lady's compact similarly decorated (paint chips), a similar marquetry box containing game pieces, dice, knight chess piece and spinning gambling top, a copy of "Wright's Monthly Racing Turf Guide for 1873," and a hinged wooden box with horse racing roulette wheel, manufactured by F. H. Ayres of London. Normal wear and soiling to fabric liner/covering.

The middle drawer contains four assorted sheaved daggers made by Walker & Hall of Sheffield, a brass and mother-of-pearl cigar clipper, a brass and mother-of-pearl horseshoe vesta or match safe, a leather-cased twelve-piece sewing and personal grooming kit with steel and mother-of-pearl components, plus a pistol for personal protection, or resolving arguments, described thusly:

Smith & Wesson Top-Break Single Action Revolver. Serial no. 49051, .32 caliber, 3 ½-inch ribbed barrel with fixed front and rear sights. Nickel-plated finish. Case-hardened hammer and spur trigger, Mother-of-pearl grip panels.
Condition is very good. Retaining approximately 50-60% finish with areas of thinning, handling wear, and patches of pitting. Action good. Lightly pitted bore.

The bottom drawer contains a hinged wooden box with sixteen horse racing playing cards (part of board game), a silvered brass box with forty-six painted-lead horsey game pieces, a canvas strip depicting eight race horses (likely part of the aforementioned board game), a silk-screened felt panel with names of horses and their odds of winning, a larger felt panel used in a steeple-chase race horse game, and a large roulette wheel used in the game. All with light to moderate wear, indicating use over a period of time. Appears to date from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. We believe it is complete in all respects.
