Fine and Historic Cased Pair of Inscribed "Aid de Camp General Staff " Colt Model 1851 Navy or Belt Model Revolvers
Serial numbers 44284 and 44415. .36 caliber, 6-shot cylinders with naval engagement roll scene. 7 1/2-inch octagon barrels with brass pin front sights. Top of each barrel stamped:
- Address Saml. Colt New-York City -
Left side of frame stamped "Colts/Patent." Each revolver blued, with color case-hardened frame, hammer, and loading lever, and with blued steel gripstraps, with small triggerguards and short triggers. The grips of varnished walnut. Each backstrap inscribed: "Aid De Camp General Staff " in block letters.
Varnished rosewood double case, lined in burgundy velvet. Escalloped brass plaque inlaid on lid inscribed: "Aid de Camp/General Staff " in block letters. Embossed stand of arms powder flask, blued steel double cavity bullet mold, two tins of Eley Bros. percussion caps with green paper labels, each in paper wrappers, pewter oil bottle, packet of combustible envelope cartridges by D.C. Sage, blued L-shaped screwdriver/nipple wrench, and miscellaneous round and conical lead projectiles. Escalloped brass keyplate inlaid on front of case. Fabric cover to bottom of case.
A similar cased pair was in the William M. Locke collection, pictured page 95 of Frank Sellers, The William M. Locke Collection. These revolvers bore serial nos. 44704 and 44705, and were likewise cased in rosewood, and with inscribed backstraps, and lid plaque.

Condition Report*: Excellent to mint. Cylinder scenes, inscriptions and all markings excellent. 90-95% blue, with minor patina, spots turned brown. 95% case hardening with minor fading. 100% varnish on grips. Case and accessories fine to excellent.
