Notarized Letter from Laura Garrett Confirming Ownership and History to Father in Law.
Colt Single Action Army Revolver Inscribed to Lawman Buck
Garrett Along with Related Items.Serial no. 256770, 4 3/4-inch barrel, .38 WCF caliber. Top of barrel marked [two-line] COLTS PT. F.A. MFG. CO. / HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A. Left side marked 38 WCF. Two-line patent dates on left side of frame. Nice smooth grips marked BUCK GARRETT / ARDMORE OKLA. Manufactured in 1904.
October 10, 1986 notarized letter authenticating the gun reads: "To Whom It May Concern: This is to certify that on this date I sold a Colt Single Action Revolver, serial 256770, to Bill Watson of Las Vegas, Nevada. The gun is blue with a 4 3/4" barrel and is .38 WCF Caliber. It is also equipped with grips.........BUCK GARRETT engraved into grips. The above mentioned gun was one of my father-in-law's personal guns. BUCK GARRETT was a Deputy US Posseman, Deputy US Marshal, Chief of Police of Ardmore, Oklahoma, and Sheriff of Carter County, Ardmore, Oklahoma. He also participated in the Johnson County Cattle War of Wyoming in 1892. My father-in-law was known to have carried this gun while a lawman and in the mid 1920's while a body guard for Governor Walton in Oklahoma City." Signed, Laura Garrett. [Witnessed by Col. Wm. O. Accompanying this gun is a grouping of Buck Garrett related items including; 1) Pair of gal leg spurs, with September 23, 1986 notarized letter stating "This letter is to certify that on this date, Bill Watson of Las Vegas, Nevada, purchased two pairs of McChesney Gal Leg Spurs from me. / These spurs were especially made for my father-in-law, Buck Garrett and my mother-in-law, Ida Mae Garrett, by McChesney's of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, in 1902." Signed Laura Garrett. [Witnessed by Col. Wm O. Mueller]. Note: Items 2 thru 5 do not have letters from Laura Garrett. 2) Cased reading glasses, case marked BUCK GARRETT / ARDMORE OKLA. 3) Leather shoulder holster marked BUCK. 4) Two vintage hand cuffs "come alongs". and 5) Leather bound, vintage grooming set, appears complete, marked on flap in gold lettering BUCK.
As a young man, Buck Garrett was a gunman for wealthy Wyoming cattle barons. He then became a deputy US marshal and is credited with hunting down and killing Bill Dalton, the last of the Dalton Gang. Following this, Garrett served as Sheriff of Carter County, Oklahoma from 1911-1922. Garrett was assisted in his dangerous work by Sheriff Bud Ballew, who also operated a cattle ranch and speculated in oil leases in the Ardmore area.
Condition: Very good as configured, gun is mostly a dark gray patina with some period touch ups. Tracking line present. Grips, a bit lose and with cracks on both sides [repaired from inside]. Action is good, bore ok. All extra items; spurs, "come alongs", leather holster and grooming kit have age wear and scuffs/mars from years of handling. Nelson A. Faerber Collection.
