Cased and Engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver in the Gustav Young Style.Serial no. 91477 with dot [all matching, wedge 1477], .31 caliber, 4-inch octagonal barrel marked SAML COLT in script. Originally blued. This gun has at least 75% of scroll and floral engraving as well as punch-dot engraving similar in style to Young. No scene left on cylinder. Dog's head design to left side of barrel lung and hammer. Left side of frame marked COLTS PATENT. Replaced one-piece walnut grip. Contained in associated case to the period. Accessories include; percussion caps [dented], lead balls, eagle flask and dual cavity bullet mold marked COLT PATENT. Note: Similar examples of this engraving style can be found in various books including The Book of Colt Engraving by Wilson. According to research, Gustave Young worked for Colt from the early 1850's till about 1868. Although we cannot confirm Young engraved this gun, it displays characteristics almost identical to him. Also, dot designations under the serial number usually indicate factory engraving. Manufactured in 1854. From Opplemans Trading & Exchange Co.
Condition: Good as configured, gun has evidence of heavy cleaning and touch ups. Gun mostly a dull gray finish overall. Cylinder is bare apart from serial number, appears to have been harshly cleaned. Scattered pitting throughout. Grips are replacements, with faint mars, dents and chips. Case with age wear and flaws. Some bumps, scuffs and dents from handling. Interior with slight separations, scuffs to fitting and minor losses to lining. Accessories with moderate wear and staining. Bullet mold and flask with wear and dents. Marred screws, replaced and altered screw on butt of frame. Action good. Bore dark.
