Description
Important U.S. Colt Model 1911A1 Semi-Automatic Pistol D-Day Ensemble From LST-285 Medical Officer. Comprising: 1) U.S. Army Colt Model 1911 A1 Semi-Automatic Pistol with U.S. Marked Leather Holster. Serial no. 784494, .45 caliber, 5-inch barrel with standard fixed sights. Parkerized finish. Checkered hard rubber grips. Sold along with a Boyt 42 U.S. leather holster.Condition: Very good. Retaining approximately 92-95% finish with thinning to relief edges, scattered handling wear and fine patches of pitting. Grips showing light scuffs. Action crisp. Bright bore.
2) Wounded Treated List. 34 page list of battle causalities treated by Dr Slattery the first page dated June 6-7 1944, continuing to August 17 1944 with a detailed list of each soldier's name, home address, wounds, treatment and outcome. The first 6 pages location U.S.S. LST 285.
Condition: Excellent with minor expected stains and folds.
3) Medic Helmet. A combat worn front-seam fixed-bale M-1 helmet with stainless lip. Painted on the front and rear with medic insignia. Westinghouse liner with early rayon suspension. Liner is tight in the shell and has not been removed.
Condition: Very good. Worn condition as expected with scratches to the exterior and wear to the lining.
4) Combat Helmet. Front-seam fixed-bale M-1 helmet with stainless lip. Mine Safety Appliances liner with OD webbing. Interior has 2 packs of Sulfanilamide held fast with paperclips and 2 morphine syrettes tied to the center string, both obviously present since the war. Exterior covered with camouflage netting. Liner tight and not been removed.
Condition: Very good. Exterior shows dents and scratches. Lining with wear to the leather sweatband and soiling.
5) Magazine Pouch. Canvas two-pocket .45 magazine canvas pouch dated 1942 inked on the flap "Slattery".
6) Battlefield Pickups: Consisting of German : Army M42 single decal helmet with full liner and chin strap. Army M43 field hat. Army EM/NCO leather belt, buckle and 3 pocket K98 ammunition pouch. German military medics vest. K98 bayonet with matching numbers.
Condition: Very good showing normal service wear.
7) US M1917 Hospital Corps Bolo Knife with wooden grip. Contained in canvas and leather covered scabbard.
Condition: Very good. Blade sharpened, scabbard shows scuffs and wear.
8) Photograph of "Blue Beach" of Operation Dragon in southern France. Measures 15" X 24", inked with tactical symbols and dated 15 August 1944.
Condition: Very good. 2" rip on the left side and shows some surface cracks.
Sold together with a notarized letter from the the son of the medic confirming that all of this material came home from Europe with his father and confirming that his father was "...present at the Allied invasion of Europe, 'D-Day,' June 6, 1944, serving in combat on Omaha beach at Normandy." Also included in the lot is a copy of "D-Day" by Stephen Ambrose. A page and a half mentions Dr. Slattery in the chapter on Omaha beach.
