Description
Rare Virginia Manufactory First Model Military Flintlock Pistol. .69 caliber smoothbore, 12 1/2-inch shortened musket barrel, held to stock by standard double band iron strap at muzzle with no sight present. Marked with a V at breech. Flintlock mechanism marked: Virginia/Manufactory/Richmond/1811. Iron pan. Walnut pistol stock of standard configuration with iron furniture and ramrod. Iron pommel cap. For information on this rare pistol, see the volume, Confederate Handguns by Albaugh, Benet and Simmons, pages 209-211 or Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms, 6B-058. Total numbers of this model believed manufactured at 2,208 units. Condition: Fair to good as configured. These guns were all salvage projects, made from existing musket parts, resulting in the largest single-shot military American handgun ever made. Metal showing dark age patina and scattered pitting. Cock, jaw and screw are possible replacements. Screws marred. Stock showing age wear and multiple hairline cracks. Butt showing early splice repairs. Action a bit weak, but functions.Auction Info
