Rare Colt Model 1861 Navy Percussion Revolver, Shoulder Stock
Variation.Serial no. 11555 [S] [all matching, no mark on wedge], .36 caliber, 7 1/2-inch round barrel marked - ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA -. Originally blued/plated according to letter. Naval scene on cylinder, faint but complete. Iron backstrap with notch at heel to mount a shoulder stock. Left frame marked COLTS / PATENT and .36 CAL on brass triggerguard. Sub-inspector D mark under barrel. The Book of Colt Firearms by RL Wilson states: A limited number of Model 1861 pistols were fitted with attachable shoulder stocks. All were in the #11000 and #14000 serial ranges, and the total production was about 100 pieces. The third model stock was the only pattern used. Serial numbers on the bottom tang of the stock yoke and on the frame, triggerguard, backstrap, and bottom of the barrel lug of these pistols have an S beneath the markings (abbreviation for stock). Sold together with photocopy of similar gun sold at auction with full description in March 2016, an Original Colt Factory letter stating configuration including; serial no, caliber, barrel length, finish and shipped to: J.C. Grubb and Company / Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 24, 1862 in a shipment of 20 guns. Contained in contemporary wooden box, blue lining.
Condition: Good for this model, mostly a gray patina overall. Some pitting present. Wood grips with moderate to heavy wear, dings and stress cracks [butt area], traces of varnish present. Tracking line present. Loading lever and wedge possibly period replacements. Box very good, some scuffs and handling wear. Mechanically good, bore dark.
