Description
French Silver Mounted Flintlock Pistol by Jean-Baptiste Lamotte.A hallmarked silver-mounted flintlock holster pistol, circa 1800. French lock and barrel, both signed: J BTE LAMOTTE AINE A ST. ETIENNE. Approximately .64 caliber, 14 ΒΌ-inch two stage barrel with canon muzzle and gold front sight. Barrel breech section chiseled in high relief with a drapery and a trophy of arms supported by 2 columns all surmounted by sunburst/crescent moon motif. Tail of lock and back of frizzen chiseled in bas relief and inlaid with gold. The cock chiseled in high relief with a trophy of arms upon similarly gilt granular ground. Ornate back-plate depicting mortars, cannon, helmets, drums and flags chiseled in high-relief and framed by borders of inlaid silver wire. Gold accents to mounting screws. Burl wood full stock profusely inlaid with meandering silver wire scrolls with silver dot borders and silver leaves. Chiseled silver furniture. Mounted with cast-silver grip cap, trigger guard (struck with two hallmarks), and ramrod pipes. Note: Jean-Baptiste Lamotte, St. Etienne, 1782 - 1856. See Der Neue Stockel, p. 676.
Condition: Good to very good. Barrel a mostly smooth, gray patina with scattered patches of staining and fine pitting. Silver nearly all intact and with normal age patina. Gilt surfaces showing light wear with good luster. Stock is good showing some holster wear. Both barrel wedges absent. Frizzen spring with break at bottom. Cock screw bent. Action functions. Ram rod absent. Age wear at the butt cap.
The Lamotte family under the direction of Marie-Annie Lamotte, maintained sales in luxury arms in 1800 through 9 trading outlets across the world including Morocco, Egypt, Turkey and America.
In 1810 she created an arms depot at Smyrna on the west coast of Turkey, an enterprise which continued until 1819.
