Historic Colt Army Special Double Action Revolver Belonging to East Chicago Police Captain Timothy O'Neil Who Claimed Credit for the Killing of Public Enemy No.1 John Dillinger. Serial no. 444182, .38 caliber, 5-inch barrel with fixed sights. Blued finish. Checkered hard rubber grips which are scratch-numbered to the gun on inside of each. Condition: Good to very good. Retaining approximately 35-45% original finish, the balance fading to a slightly mottled gray-brown patina. Scattered handling marks. Crack to right grip panel, visible on inside only. Action crisp. Bright bore with light wear. Sold together with an important lot of ephemera. Comprising: 1) Captain O'Neil's personal scrapbook collection of articles and photos from his long career in law enforcement. 2) Factory letter from Colt Firearms confirming current configuration and noting ship date of 1919 to the sporting goods store of Von Lengerke and Antoine in Chicago. This store sold firearms to the public including Tommy Guns to Chicago gangsters. 3) The July 31, 1934 signed thank you note from J.Edgar Hoover to Captain O'Neil thanking him for his assistance in the "location and shooting of John Dillinger." 4) The notarized statement front the O'Neil family tracing ownership back to Captain O'neil and confirming it was the gun he owned "during his time of service with the East Chicago Indiana Police Department." 5) Two area newspaper accounts from early 1936 quoting O'Neil as stating that he fired one of the fatal shots. Both indicate that O'Neil spoke up after Hoover claimed that only his FBI agents fired at Dillinger.Auction Info

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.View More Testimonials
As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
HA.com receives more traffic than any other auction house website. (Source: Similarweb.com)
